Build a balanced wainscoting layout before cutting trim
Wainscoting and frame-style wall trim depend on proportion. Small spacing errors become obvious when repeated across a wall. This calculator treats the stiles as real-width pieces and distributes the panel openings evenly across the measured wall.
Start with the visible wall
Measure between the actual boundaries of the design—not necessarily drywall corner to drywall corner. If base trim, casing, cabinets, or an inside corner will visually terminate the wainscoting, use those finished boundaries. Then enter the stile width and either the desired number of stiles or the approximate panel opening you want.
Use the blueprint as the install plan
- Confirm the first and last boundaries on the wall with painter's tape.
- Transfer the calculated center marks from one consistent starting edge.
- Check the visual panel proportions before cutting every piece.
- Account for door and window casing separately when a run is interrupted.
Does this calculate wainscoting height?
No. This tool focuses on horizontal stile and panel layout; choose the finished height separately.
Can I use it for picture-frame molding?
Yes. The same spacing logic works for repeated decorative wall panels when the vertical members share a consistent width.
