Design board-and-batten spacing from the finished wall width
Board-and-batten layouts look simple until real wall dimensions, batten widths, corners, and end conditions are included. This calculator works from the finished wall width and the actual face width of the battens so the visible panel openings are consistent.
Choose count or target opening
If you already know how many battens you want, use count mode and MeasureMarks will calculate the resulting panel opening. If you have a visual target—such as panels around 18 inches wide—use target-opening mode and the calculator will choose a sensible batten count and show the actual opening created by the wall.
Installation tips
- Measure the finished wall between the exact edges that will define the layout.
- Use actual batten face width after milling or purchase.
- Decide whether you want battens at the outside edges or equal margins before marking.
- Use the center marks to snap or pencil vertical reference lines before adhesive or nails are applied.
Should I lay out centers or edges?
Centers are easier to mark consistently. The blueprint still shows batten width and the resulting panel opening.
What about outlets and corners?
Use the calculator for the base pattern, then adjust individual battens only where real wall obstacles require it.
